Ist ICT Conference Munich on Economic Growth 2010

ICTCM EG 2010From 4-6 November, 2010, the international conference on "ICT and Economic Growth" took place in Munich. 75 participants from 10 different countries attended the conference.

In the opening keynote speech, Marcel Timmer gave an overview of the impact of information and communication technologies (ICTs) on economic growth at the industry level and pointed out differences in US and EU developments. The second day started with Shane Greenstein's keynote speech on the "Broadband Bonus", a recent study that quantifies the economic impact of broadband on the US economy.

The paper sessions focused around the topics of (I) Diffusion and Innovation, (II) Strategy in ICT Markets, (III) Regulation and Public Policy and (IV) Productivity and Growth.

At the policy panel, practitioners and policy makers expressed their views on the issue of "ICT and Economic Growth" and discussed them with the audience. Tobias Kretschmer, professor at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and head of the Institute for Strategy, Technology and Organization (ISTO), chaired the panel. Detlef Eckert, director "Lisbon Strategy and Policies for the Information Society" in the Directorate General "Information Society and Media" (DG INFSO) of the European Commission, Andreas Fier, senior economist at Deutsche Telekom AG and Christian Göttsch, founder and CEO of Experteer, were the panelists.

The members of the scientific committee of the conference were Mélisande Cardona (LMU), Mirco Draca (LSE/CEP and UCL), J.P. Eggers (NYU Stern), Oliver Falck (Ifo Institute), Marco Giarratana (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid), Michał Grajek (ESMT), Shane Greenstein (Northwestern University), Steffen Hörnig (Universidade Nova de Lisboa), Tobias Kretschmer (LMU), Marcel Timmer (University of Groningen), Catherine Tucker (MIT Sloan) and Christine Zulehner (Johannes Kepler University Linz).
